Feeding behavior of Brycon hilarii (Valenciennes, 1850) (Characiformes, Bryconidae) in the North Pantanal, Brazil: a relationship of supply and vulnerability
Abstract:
The Pantanal is one of the largest continuous wetlands in the world. This wetland, because its rich biodiversity and natural resources (water abundance), generates a source of income for local populations and fishermen. However, several modifications can harm this type of environment. The use of ceva (fermented grains of soya and/or maize) can unbalance the quality of the fish's diet, making them dependent and less skilled in capturing their own food. The objective of this work is to analyze the diversity of foods in the B. hilarii diet in different habitats, focusing on the effect of ceva on the species' diet. The samples were carried out in three sections that are part of the Hydrographic Region of the Paraguay River, Paraguay river/Porto Estrela, Sepotuba River and Taiamã Ecological Station (EET). 205 specimens were collected, captured by rods, hook, line of different measures and baits (cassava flour). The results show that the B. hilarii diet is based on corn and soybeans, in the stretches of the Paraguay river/Porto Estrela and the Sepotuba rivers, while in the EET, the diet consists of insects, dissolved material and parts of plants. It is observed that B. hilarii is an opportunistic specialist, a fact indicated by the easy attractiveness of the abundant food in the environment by the species, such as the use of ceva. The widespread use of ceva can cause a reduction in the number of individuals, mainly due to the condensation of individuals and the ease of capture. Furthermore, our results consider that protective measures of the species, such as the non-use of ceva, and priority areas for conservation, are fundamental aspects for the maintenance of the species in the wetland.
